We need a Conservative political party

With the political spectrum being Liberal on the left, and Conservative on the right, the Republican party is about in the middle. It has become the party of big government, big budgets and large government control of our lives. The Democrat party is on the left, with the leadership being far left. They are the party of even bigger government, even bigger budgets, and much more control of our lives. If we had truth in labeling applied to this, the Democrat party would be called the Socialist or Marxist Party, since the things that they want add up to plain old socialism or Marxism. No, we do not want to be the United Socialist States of America.

There are many political parties, and some of them claim to be conservative, but examine what they stand for and you find that most of those that claim to be conservative are simply anti-abortion parties. Why do people get their feelings about abortion mixed up with their politics? That doesn't make any sense, if you think about it. When Republicans talk about being "Reagan conservatives", they are talking about being anti-abortion. Let's examine the abortion issue to try to clarify it.

A few political parties that call themselves conservative:

What should a conservative party stand for?
  • Limited government with low taxes. If a government is doing only the things that it should be doing, it will not need high taxes. Most needs can be met better by a free market economy than by government action.
  • Encourage individual responsibility. For those who are not able to take care of themselves, help them to become self-reliant. Those who are just too lazy to work can be motivated by hunger.
  • Equal opportunity for all. Not equal outcome, of course, since that depends on work and ambition.
  • Strong national security. In these days of radical Islam and their attempts at really bad weapons, this has to include preemptive actions and better border security.
The Tea Party movement is attracting a lot of attention. But it is not a political party. If it becomes a political party, it will split the Republican Party in two, and result in another Democrat Party victory. We hope that the Tea Party movement will force the Republican Party to give up Socialism and move back to the conservative side of the political spectrum, where it belongs. Now, in early 2010, we are seeing some encouraging signs.
